• Dear Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to General Myer Elementary School. The Staff and I are looking forward to a great year and invite you to be an active participant with us in your child’s education.

This school year, we are continuing to build our Response to Intervention program and have modified the schedule in order to best meet the needs of all students needing re-teaching and needing enrichment. We will begin each day with a dedicated Intervention Block that is a critical component of our instruction. There is more information concerning this program in our RtI brochure available during registration and in the school office.

Other programs we are continuing to expand are S.T.E.A.M.- and project- based approaches (S.T.E.A.M. stands for Science-Technology-Engineering-Arts-Mathematics). You will see more cross-studies in student project work (Math with Art or Music – Writing in P.E. or Math). Through the projects, students will engage in critical thinking as-well-as problem-solving with this interdisciplinary approach to learning.

While we will increase the implementation of projects, we will continue to build the foundational skills for Reading and Mathematics such as phonics, reading comprehension, vocabulary-building, adding/subtracting/multiplying/dividing numbers, decimals, fractions, and measurement. Students will also develop an understanding of art techniques, musical genres, and build their personal physical skills. Our goal is to add to the body of skills and knowledge your child will need to become a productive, literate citizen in the 21st century.

The Handbook is designed to give you quick references to key information regarding our school, policies, and procedures. Please take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with the information. If you have any unanswered questions, please call our school office (459-8986).

We have a very active P.T.O. and encourage you to participate through membership and/or volunteering.

I look forward to meeting and working with you this year.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Valerie H. Quarto

    Principal
